Voltaire acknowledged that, “four thousand volumes of metaphysics will not teach us what the soul is.”1 William James believed that our position in relation to the whole of the universe was similar to that of our pets to the whole of a human life. They take part in the scenes of our lives but have no idea of the significance of the events. They are only tangent to the meaning of world history in the same way that “we are tangent to the wider life of things.”2 That is a humbling way to look at things. Yet, if I am honest, I do sometimes feel like I am wandering through the neighborhood expecting at any moment to see my picture tacked to a telephone pole. Continue reading →

Some bookstores now have a new category – superheroes. It’s between the metaphysics and self-help sections. Theaters are showing a parade of movies about superhero characters – Spiderman, Batman, Ironman, Hulk and enough female heroes to keep it all politely balanced.

Somewhere deep in our subconscious, we have summoned this primordial archetype of the super human being, which is now deeply imbedded in our everyday culture. We look to our superhero to save us from danger, but they also represent an example of the highest human potential.

Carl G. Jung, the great transcendent psychologist, dedicated an entire chapter in his book, Alchemical Studies, to the analysis of the Chinese text, The Golden Flower, and specifically to the Taoist notion of action through non-action or, as Jung expressed it: “The art of letting things happen.”1 He says, “We must be able to let things happen in the psyche. For us, this is an art of which most people know nothing. Consciousness is forever interfering, helping, correcting, and negating, never leaving the psychic processes to grow in peace.”2
